Brin felt… odd. She sipped her fresh-squeezed orange juice and eyed her half-eaten plate of eggs and toast with suspicion. Yet, with a little thought, it was quickly apparent that this wasn’t some stomach ache.

“Brin, honey?” her mom said while she fried up more eggs in the cast iron skillet. “Not hungry?”

Sunlight filled the room, bathing everything in its golden glow. The brightness forced him to open his eyes. He did so squinting, the light painful. His body felt heavy and sluggish, a typical occurrence in the morning; yet, after another few moments of adjusting to the sunlight, and being awake in general, he realized that the heaviness was more specific.

The noise came from somewhere beneath her feet, vibrating the floorboards slightly, so she felt the sound as well. Lara turned to her boyfriend, and his face echoed the answer to the question in hers. He heard it too.

“What was that?” she asked.

The feelings swirling through him were a mixture of that anger and defiance one gets when they’ve been wronged—that energy of a resistor—combined with a nauseating fear, unlike anything he’d experienced before.
