Let’s Create!
** Either a story beginning, a story ending, a piece of flash fiction, a poem, painting, dance move—inspired by the word, Kaffeeklatsch, where does it take me? Where does it take you? Learn more about “The Word” here.
David looked over to Marta with a twitchy smile and then back to the men and women in suits around the boardroom table. The presentation was done, so half of the nerves he had just moments before were gone. Yet, the relief mixed with future uncertainty.
“I have a question,” one of the men at the table said, and David looked him in the eye, waiting. “Won’t people just say it’s been done already?”
David turned to Marta, who was ready to field that exact question.
“It’s not so much about the concept of the show, as it is about the characters of the show. Yes, it will be funny, but we want to take it further than that. Tell real stories. So, we’ll dive into drama equally with comedy.”
“Ok…” said the man at the table, nodding his head, yet his expression gave away no sign of approval or disproval.
“So,” said a different man at the table, “you don’t think people will harp on us for the similarities, here?”
“Not if we write the characters and story like we’re saying,” David said.
“But it’s almost identical in the setting,” said a woman at the table. “New York City, their apartment, and instead of a diner, you have a coffee shop.”
“The setting,” Marta said, “is just window dressing. The characters we’ve created, and their relationships are what will matter. That’s all anyone will talk about. They’ll connect to this group of friends more than where it takes place.”
“And what will you call the show?” said the man at the head of the table.
David turned to Marta, and they spoke in unison. “Friends.”
Notes/Thoughts/Ideas
Today’s word is basically the concept for the show, Friends! Right? Talking or gossiping at an informal gathering where coffee is served. So, I thought it would be fun to imagine or write something that pays homage to the show.
Then, I thought about how similar it is to Seinfeld in terms of setting choice and that it could have resulted in a comedic pitch meeting. Thus, today’s flash-fiction story was born! Let me imagine that meeting and have some fun with it.
The creators of the show, Friends, are indeed David and Marta, but I obviously don’t know anything else that went into the show’s creation. Just having a bit of fun.
But wait… perhaps we can create a sitcom about the creation of sitcoms??? Lol.
